Cat scratchers are much more than just a toy. They are a real must for indoor cats who don’t have the opportunity to spend their nails marking trees or digging in the dirt.
For a cat, scratching is much more than a game, it is a form of communication since with scratching they mark their areas of action and warn other animals of their presence. If in a home the cat does not have a place to scratch and indulge this instinct, it will end up doing it in the corners of the sofa, the door frames or the furniture.
There are a lot of very attractive scraper models on the market that span all sizes, but they are often expensive. And there is not always enough space for them. Therefore, making a scraper can be a great idea, since it is very simple.
You only need fine wood, like the one you can buy cut in any DIY store, twisted sisal cord and white glue. Better than the one used for children’s crafts that is not toxic.
A good idea is to buy two pieces of wood and join them with some L-shaped tabs. In this way we can place the scratching post in the corner of the sofa where the cat likes to scratch or on a door. We can also use an elongated board that we will later screw into the wall so that the cat can not only scratch, but also stretch completely.
Having chosen the design, we nailed a corner of sisal in a point of the wood and began to wrap it around it. We will use the glue so that each row of sisal is firmly attached to the previous one and to the wood and in this way the scraper is not disassembled on the first day of games. It is very important that the cord is perfectly taut so that it does not catch when playing and ends up easily detaching.
The first few days, the cat may not know very well what we are offering and show reluctance. A good idea is to play with your kitten and invite him to scratch, even holding his legs lovingly and running them through the sisal. In no time, scratching will become one of his favorite toys.
